50 years ago, two men from Tainui – Wiremu Toetoe and Hemara Te Rerehau – took the trip of a lifetime on board the ‘Novara’ a Viennese scientific frigate and returned to New Zealand with . . . a printing press, a gift from the Emperor of Austria.

Local film maker Tearepa Kiha, also from Tainui, now retraces their footsteps via the journal of Hemara Te Rerehau, the younger of the two men, in a bid to learn more about their historic voyage and its impact on New Zealand, while trying to separate the myth from the story.
