Alexander Behse is an accomplished Producer with an impressive 20-year career that includes producing an eclectic portfolio of award-winning risk-taking documentaries, films, and television series. With a solid reputation as an innovative and prolific young storyteller, he is known for pushing the boundaries in development, production, and financing of indigenous, factual, and adventure programming. His successes include delivering unique, high-impact, top-quality final projects within tight budget and time constraints.
Most recently Alex produced a documentary directed by Jan Ollie Lucks that chronicles the director and his fiancée’s yearlong open relationship and offers a clever examination of perspective. Most notably, it was New Zealand’s first-ever HBOmax Original, which garnered significant buzz on social media platforms, especially Twitter.
In 2017, Alex executive produced My Year With Helen, with one of NZ’s most acclaimed female directors, Dame Gaylene Preston. This documentary tells the life story of New Zealand’s first-elected female Prime Minister, as she attempts to become the United Nations’ first-ever female Secretary-General. The film was world premiered at the Sydney Film Festival in 2017, where it received standing ovations. As well at the 2019 Huawei Mate30 Pro NZTV Awards, it won Best Documentary and Best Director.
Subsequently, Alex joined award-winning director Annie Goldson to produce Kim Dotcom: Caught in the Web, a feature documentary that tells the ‘larger–than–life’ story of the German tech entrepreneur’s battle with the US government and entertainment industry over issues of ownership, privacy, and piracy in the digital age. The film was sold to Hulu in the US, with Gravitas Ventures taking worldwide rights and a deal brokered by XYZ Films. Also, it became the #1 independent doc in iTunes charts in NZ, US, Germany, and Canada.
Previously, Alex teamed up with Director, Tearepa Kahi, to produce Poi E: The Story of a Song, a box-office hit handled by Sony Pictures. This film tells the story of how POI-E became the first song to bring te reo Maori language to mainstream audiences and beat out Michael Jackson’s Thriller at #1. It’s ranking as one of the Top 5 documentaries of all time at the New Zealand box office. Additionally, the song became a chart-topping, best-selling single and first-ever non-English hit in the US, Canada, and Germany.
Prior to this, Alex produced the primetime series, Davey Hughes – Untamed, following the extraordinary journeys of this Kiwi adventurer on nine different and challenging voyages in some of the most far-reaching corners of the globe. Accordingly, it won the time-slot over the main broadcast channels and tripled ratings from week one to week five. Ultimately, the broadcast rights were sold around the world to Pulse TV, ITVN, First HDTV, Outdoor Channel, Cazavision, and many more.
Earlier in his career Alex produced two seasons of the popular primetime series, Radar across the Pacific, where charismatic Te Radar embarks on an entertaining journey to discover the wonders, wildlife, and strangeness of the Pacific Islands. This led to winning the Best Factual Series at Qantas Film and TV Awards in 2012 and selection as a finalist at New York Festivals, TV and Film Awards in 2015, where it won a Silver Medal.
Alex obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Technical Engineering from the University of Technology in Ilmenau, Germany. He went on to earn his Master of Arts degree in Media Arts and Production from University of Technology Sydney in Australia and then his Master of Arts degree in European Audio-Visual Management in Ronda, Spain.
Alex has also served as a Judge for the Atom Awards since 2014; a member of the Grand Jury of the New York Festivals World’s Best Film and TV since 2015; and a Selector of Feature Documentaries for the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
